Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The administration of President George W. Bush was deeply involved in the improper firings of federal prosecutors, the head of House Judiciary Committee charged on Tuesday in releasing a crush of documents.

This is the BIGGEST waste of time in politics in recent history. The facts are that the attorneys are hired and fired by the President. That's it. No guidance for how or why they are to be hired / fired. They need to get over this and move on.

Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
You want transparency or not? Make up your mind.
In the least, it is important for you to know the lengths that our politicians can go to push agendas - it seems there are no limits. This issue has ramifications when attorneys general are prosecuting cases in the states at the behest of the Executive (imagine Rahm Emanuel taking out political opponents), or issuing warrants based on agendas rather than due process of law (sound like the past thirty years, maybe?) Don't give me this "serves at the pleasure of the president" crap - that's a philosophical interpretation on par with "if the president orders it, it is not illegal". There are precedents here and they all stink. Truth is, there are some loopholes that need to be closed if the other branches of government are not going to provide checks to balance the powers of the Executive. I imagine this is a long time coming - like radically reforming Congress and term-limits for supreme-court justices (for starters).
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
The checks and balances are there.....or at least were there. Until Congress passed the patriot act. They gave away their power to check the President. The interim appointments (sorry I don't remember exact periods here and I am working so I don't have the time to look up) are only supposed to last X amount of time but that was extended to basically forever. More hastily written crap legislation with lasting effects. Essenially if they suspected the President was acting in a incorrect manner, they could refuse to allow an appointment to that positon other than the one that was fired.
Regardless of all that, I have read through the laws and supsequent changes to the laws. No where is there any guidance other than he can hire and fire the attorneys. That's the law. Spending time and money on the issue is a waste IMHO. The very best (or worst depeding on how you look at it) that can happen is someone declares that he did indeed act in political manner. Shame on GW Bush. That's it.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
The outcomes of this can determine whether or not impropriety occurred during politically-motivated prosecutions - some people may not deserve to be in jail, but are. Tell them it's a waste of time.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
Did they receive trial by jury? Have they appealed? If they are in jail incorrectly, a failure in the whole system exists. The thing about this case is, it's nothing new. Attorney Generals usual resign when a President takes office, Especially an opposite party President. They are replaced by AGs that are people that the President wants in those offices, it is a political appointment. This time a big deal has been made of it because Congress screwed up in the Patriot Act and eliminated part of the checks and balances process. And also because libs were looking for any reason however small and insignificent to impeach Bush.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
I need to know what the fuck is going on in my government - that's the bottom line.
Witch hunts are ridiculous, but Justice is not. There are AGs for every state, federal prosecutors abound - this could get ugly if the White House is spending time micro-managing local-level politics so that they could, say, eliminate political opposition on the grass-roots level and keep governors in their pocket. The system should buck this kind of tampering - it's extortion and people lives are being fucked with by our Executive.
I'm glad I found out about it (early last year) and the action to investigate this behavior is just another opportunity to clue us in to the real workings of our failed system.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
It does seem a waste of time, but with all that gitmo and 9/11 stuff going on, and people raising eyebrows about the war in Iraq, people are going to want to put the gov't under a lot of pressure and they want to know everything the administration is responsible for.
I'm sure the ladies in the white house would like to know exactly who keeps leaving the toilet seat up.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
There is no crime or impropriety here at all! These judges are serving at the pleasure of the sitting President - they can be fired and hired at will!
The DEMS should get over it and stop trying to distract from more relevant and current issues - like maybe Health care Reform and Cap and Trade!
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
Like I said, it's nothing but a diversion, those in power will continue to throw out Red Herrings to keep the "Herd" from focusing on the real crimes that they commit.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
It's nothing more than a diversion from the real crimes that Administration committed and the Obama Administration along with the DNC who refuse to pursue. They're only attempting to throw a few bones at the people so they can seem to be doing something.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
I totally agree that this is only a diversion and to let the public stay away from the real issues concern.
Re: Democrats release papers on Bush prosecutor firings
Just more of the same old bullshit. How about the Dems stop beating a dead horse and actually do something fucking worthwhile for a CHANGE!
